Have you bought a ceiling light fixture but are unsure how to mount it? The process is simpler than you might think. To help you install a beautiful chandelier, we are offering 7 easy steps to replacing a ceiling light fixture.
Adding a new light fitting can be a little complex, and you should never mess with any wires unless you are have the necessary skills. To help you install a new ceiling light fixture or another home improvement task, easily find a builder or electrician in your local area. Do not risk injuring yourself or others if you are not confident you can complete the job safely.
How it Works
In most cases, a central threaded hollow rod will firmly hold a light fixture. The fixture will be mounted with two screws, which easily connect the fixture base to the outlet box. Alternatively, it could be attached from a mounting strap in the outlet box.
You will, however, be happy to learn that the wiring process is rather simple. While it is likely that other wires will pass through the outlet box, you will only need to use three wires: a coloured (commonly black), white and green ground wire. You can easily connect the wires using a twist-on wire connector.
Step One: Turn Off the Power
Before you do anything, it is important to turn off the mains power, which will ensure you can safely work on the ceiling light fixture. All the wires must be dead before your get to work.
Step Two: Remove the Light Bulb
Your next step should be to carefully remove the existing light bulb cover and bulbs from the fixture.
Step Three: Disconnect the Fixture from the Base
Grab the right screwdriver to unscrew the screws or nuts attaching the fixture base to the ceiling box. However, replacing a ceiling light fixture can be a tricky process, as you will need to hold onto the light fixture whilst trying to disconnect the wires. We therefore recommend having a helpful assistant, so you will have another pair of hands available to help, if needed.
Step Four: Remove the Electrical Tape
Your next step should be to lower the fixture base, before removing any electrical tape or wire nuts from the hot, neutral or ground wire. Again, make sure your assistant is on hand to help, if you need help juggling the fixture, screwdriver or to hold the ladder.
Step Five: Attach the Wires
The process is nearly complete. All you need to do now is attach the wires from the new ceiling light fixture with the wire nuts to connect it to the corresponding wires located inside the electrical box.
Step Six: Position the New Base
Once the wires have been connected, you need to raise the fixture and position the base plate, before screwing in the new screws into the attached mounting strap.
Step Seven: Add the Light Bulbs
All that is left to do is screw in your new light bulbs, install a cover and turn on the power to transform the look and feel of your home.
