The Executive Hire Show 2020 kicks off to a great start

THE tool, equipment and compact plant hire industry continues to go from strength to strength following reports from the organisers of the Executive Hire Show 2020 (5 - 6 February Ricoh Arena, Coventry).

During the annual exhibitor ‘kick-off’ meeting at the show’s established home at the Ricoh Arena, which took place on 10 October, the team reported that an impressive 142 exhibitors had already signed up for the 2020 Show and the event is already 87% sold.

The meeting was well attended, with exhibitors both old and new taking time out of their busy schedules to attend the event. Team members from exhibiting companies including Thwaites, Altrad Belle, Hire Association Europe (HAE), HSC (Hire Supply Company), Shindaiwa, Insphire Ltd, Bomag and many more made the journey to the Ricoh.

It was also the first time that many of the exhibitors in attendance had the opportunity to meet with the brand-new members of the Executive Hire Show team.

Chris Moore, the new Publishing and Events Director for the show, opened the proceedings highlighting the success of the previous Shows and how the 14th annual event is aiming even higher in terms of exhibitors and visitor attendance. He said: “Make sure you are ready to do business and maximise the full benefit of the show! Exhibitors and visitors travel from all over the UK to take part and visit and we are on course to set new records once again by working together as team.”

Chris Moore handed over to Hannah Webb who is the head of operations at the parent Hemming Group and also the new head of operations for the EHS. She is responsible for ‘putting the show together’ and ensuring the entire event runs seamlessly providing the best possible experience for the show’s exhibitors and visiting hirers. 

Hannah Webb introduced the appointed contractors for show which included Showlite, who were instrumental in the show’s new look which was debuted at the 2019 event. Also represented were Circdata, who are responsible for visitor registration and data capture. Hannah Webb also explained to the exhibitors the new look ‘back office’ of the website, social media assets and the all new exhibitor manual.

The EHS National Visitor Campaign is the ‘centrepiece’ of the Executive Hire Show’s efforts to attract hirers to the event. This year will be no exception and once again the show will be working in partnership with The Hire Supply Company to utilise the expert services of Steve McKenzie and his team, who visited over 800 hire depots throughout the UK and Ireland for the 2019 event.

The 2020 campaign has already started and Chris Moore will be joining the mega ‘Road Trip’ alongside Steve McKenzie’s team. Steve reported: “Our team plan to mobilise hirers to attend the 14th annual show – we are passionate about this event and want to deliver good quality visitors. We go that extra mile and between us we have 152-years’ experience in this industry and have made some very good contacts over the years.”

He added: “We are planning on 850 visits as part of the 2020 campaign – these visits also form the initial judging process for the ‘Passionate Hirer Awards, which are presented at the show during the party on the first evening.”

Steve McKenzie concluded by encouraging all to get involved to make this show a success.

Next to address the audience was the Executive Hire Show’s (also Executive Hire News Editor) Alan Guthrie, who highlighted additional features of the event. He announced that back by popular demand is the Innovation Trail.

The ‘Innovation Trail – Live!’ is also making a return - where 10 selected Innovation Trail products, which judges consider to be particularly outstanding, will be exhibited on a specially branded stage area in Hall 2. 

Alan Guthrie explained the concept, saying: “Each chosen ‘Innovation Trail – Live!’ supplier will be given a dedicated 10-minute slot to present and explain their product and talk the audience through its innovative qualities. These individual sessions will take place during the two days of the show. Paul Hutton, a radio, podcast and YouTube channel presenter, has once again agreed to host ‘Innovation Trail – Live!’ Paul will interview each company’s representative live on the stage.”

EHS Sales Manager Lee Westney was next up to highlight sponsorship opportunities surrounding the show and brand-new Sales Executive, Tierney Elliott also addressed the audience with a witty talk on other opportunities to help maximise exhibitor’s presence at the 2020 show.

Last and by no means least, exhibitors and guests were reminded about the EHS 2019 series of industry Road Shows. The next is being held on Tuesday 12 November from 4.30 - 7.30pm at the Mercure (formerly Thistle) Haydock Hotel, followed by another event on Wednesday 4 December from 4.30 - 7.30pm at the Holiday Inn, Bristol.

At these popular regional events, hirers and suppliers can benefit from bargains available only on the day that could boost their business. As well as hearing presentations on key issues and trends, participants will network, catch up with existing contacts while making new ones, and generally get involved.

And these events are an exciting prelude to the Executive Hire Show. With Brexit scheduled to happen on 31 October, the timing could hardly be better, enabling hirers to explore new revenue opportunities, do deals and build a positive future.

UK Construction Week unveils its latest surprises

WITH the final touches to next week’s UK Construction Week (UKCW) show now in place, the organisers are issuing a final reminder for visitor registrations.

Billed as construction’s largest industry event, the organisers are expecting more than 30,000 people at the show next week, from Tuesday to Thursday at the NEC in Birmingham.

Among the latest speakers to be confirmed, Lord Digby Jones, a cross bench peer in the House of Lords, former head of the CBI, developer, and lover of construction will be wading into the Brexit debate on day one, on Wednesday 9 October. He will be part of the session on ‘Brexit boom or bust? Industry Economic Forecast 2020’ on the main stage in Hall 12.

Also, on day two, the new construction minister Nadhim Zahawi MP is also set to make his first industry appearance. Advanced booking is being advised for both these events.

This year’s UKCW also promises some big numbers, including more than 300 expert speakers,150 hours of free CPD, a celebration of 98 industry role models, 500 exhibitors and new product launches, and more than 30 major new innovations on display in the Innovation Zone, from brick laying robots to crane simulators, from quieter and more efficient heat technologies to new software.

As part of a major focus on MMC (modern methods of construction), there are also full-scale builds at the show, a SIPS panel home, a factory-finished modular bathroom pod for the high-end hotel sector, ground breaking systems like Project Etopia, and offsite solutions for the education sector.

Nathan Garnett, event director at UKCW said: “UKCW opens in just a few days with a greater diversity of features than ever before, including innovation zones with over 50 brand new products from well-known brands and start-ups, a Wellbeing Information Zone, cycling and sporting challenges, an electric vehicle arcade, awards and construction summits, all on top of the trade show and major seminar programme you would expect.

The usual printed show guide is being switched for an environmentally friendly app as part of UKCW‘s sustainability push. To help reduce single-use plastic, free water fountains will be installed around the show and 3,000 reusable bottles will be made available to visitors. And to offset the carbon footprint of the show, UKCW is planting 2,500 trees.

UKCW is one event with many sections, including Build sponsored by Easy-Trim, Building Tech, Civils, Energy and HVAC, Surface and Materials, and Timber. It also features Concrete Expo (8-9 October only) and Grand Designs Live (9-10 October only). Single registration gives free access to all areas of the show. Considerate Constructors Scheme names winners of 2019 National Ultra Site Awards

THE UK’s best-performing Ultra Sites have been revealed at this year’s Considerate Constructors Scheme’s 2019 National Ultra Site Awards ceremony.

Highways England’s A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme Ultra Site was crowned with the highest honour at this year’s awards, winning the coveted ‘2019 Ultra Site of the Year Award’. 

This year, there were a total of ten Ultra Site award categories and, for the first time, the top-performing supplier within six of these award categories were also honoured with a special individual recognition award.

Hundreds of guests from the UK’s top-performing Ultra Sites gathered at the prestigious venue of Plaisterers’ Hall in central London on 18 July for the Awards ceremony, which was presented by Ann Bentley, the Construction Leadership Council lead on Supply Chain and Business Models.

The aim of Ultra Sites is to achieve ever greater integration of a contractor’s supply chain to meet and exceed the Scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice. Being the highest level of attainment in consideration and best practice, they are the pinnacle of excellence across the construction industry.

Chosen few revealed for HAE EHA Hire Awards of Excellence

FINALISTS have been announced for the much-anticipated Hire Awards of Excellence 2019 to be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Saturday 13th April, and will be hosted by Strictly Come Dancing star and TV presenter Anton Du Beke.

Glitterball king Du Beke, one of the most instantly recognisable figures in the world of ballroom dance, will ensure proceedings run like clockwork at the event marking the amazing achievements of hire and supply companies across the UK’s plant, tool, equipment and event hire industry.

It’s not only hire businesses competing for these prestigious accolades, crucial recognition is also given to outstanding individuals who have consistently stood out from the crowd and achieved some of the highest standards in the industry.

Awards are up for grabs in 13 different categories with the finalists being independently judged against stringent criteria, to provide an excellent way of acknowledging and showcasing some of the very best practices that the hire industry can offer.

Trime UK has bright February after the Executive Hire Show

FOLLOWING a most productive Executive Hire Show, the cheerful Trime UK sales and marketing teams arrived back at their Cambridgeshire base clutching an armful of orders placed throughout the two days of the show.

Paul Hay Trime UK’s Managing Director, said: “This year’s Executive Hire Show was the best ever for us. We took in excess of £3million worth of lighting tower orders on the stand during the two days.

“In addition we had in-depth discussions with a major tool hire firm who are stepping up their replacement programme over to our X-Splash Wash Bays and adding them to their new outlets.”

One of the single biggest orders came from the leading event and industrial lighting tower rental specialist, Illumin8 Lights Limited. Their managing director, Neil Fenwick, handed Trime an order for ECO LED sets, evaluated at over £1/2m. Another prime event hire firm, Energy Generator Hire, passed on two significant X-ECO LED orders, one for imminent delivery and the other confirmed for later in the year.

Glendun Plant Sales, the Northern Ireland based plant sales company, has been tirelessly active in promoting the X-ECO LED throughout the Country.

Consequently, Glendun’s Dermot Cunnie arrived at the Executive Hire Show ready to place a further four orders for X-ECO units for distribution to his clients. Glendun Plant Sales is based in Dungannon and is a dealer and distributor of a wide range of plant and equipment

Although site lighting towers were the most prominent products on display, Travis Perkin’s used the show to discuss arrangements for the delivery and installation of Trime’s award winning X-Splash Wash Bays.

Travis Perkins advised Trime that they had two on-going programmes that will require X-Splash systems.

These will be for both their expanding tool hire operations and for replacing and upgrading their current wash bays. Trime conspicuously displayed their Green Apple award for the X-Splash and jubilantly told all interested people of its Green Champion accreditation.

Launched in 2007, Executive Hire Show is a national exhibition for the tools, equipment and plant hire industry. The show was held on 6th and 7th February 2019, at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena.

Morris Site Machinery means business on international stage at bauma

MORRIS Site Machinery will show it means business on the international stage when it debuts two new portable lighting products and showcases world-class equipment at Bauma 2019.

The leading British equipment manufacturer, which distributes to 25 countries worldwide, will demonstrate its quality offer and global ambitions at the trade fair in Munich from 8-14 April.

Marking the 25th anniversary of its SMC brand, it will launch the SMC TL90 Evolve - the next generation SMC TL90 lighting tower - and the SMC TL60 Solar Trolley.

The SMC TL90 Evolve lighting tower offers all the functionality of the current market leading SMC TL90 but with a new ergonomic design, more compact appearance and three lamp head options. It can be fitted with the standard four LED head, the ground-breaking Halo lamp head or a six LED head making it the brightest SMC lighting tower ever.

The compact SMC TL60 Solar Trolley is battery powered with solar or plug-in charging capabilities. It can fit on a standard 500kg tail lift, while the total weight of 275kg allows excellent manoeuvrability.  The energy efficient and easily deployable unit produces zero noise and zero emissions.

Also on show will be the SMC SL80 Pallet, a super silent, static eight-metre mast lighting tower. It is highly transportable and compact, enabling 22 units to be loaded onto a 40ft trailer. Fitted with the Halo, it delivers a bright, anti-glare even spread of light from four 300W high power LED modules.

The fuel efficient, super silent ArcGen Weldmaker 330CC/CV will have a presence on the stand. It is a mobile 300amp constant current diesel driven welder generator with constant voltage selection, available skid mounted, on wheel barrow trolley or road tow trailer. It is fully compliant with the latest CE and EU standards. An ArcGen 500amp Cobra Inverter and Hilta D5 Diaphragm Pump will complete the line-up.

Executive Hire Show 2019 considered a triumph for the 13th consecutive year

Visitor numbers were also up on last year’s event with 1872 relevant hire industry visitors in attendance.

The show was bustling from the onset with hirers looking to expand their fleets and check out new innovations and launches from the diverse range of exhibitors at the show.

There were a record amount of new product launches with a strong focus on safety and environmental solutions.

The event organisers also undertook a complete redesign of the show and the 2019 event revealed a completely new layout and look. It worked - both exhibitors and visitors approved of the revamp and new look.

Morris Site Machinery International Business Director, Phil Winnington said: “The new layout worked well, and the show looked fresh.

“The new format also took away the predictability of other years. The volume of visitors was consistent with previous years and decision makers were in attendance. Morris Site Machinery is happy to support the show again in 2020.”

The Executive Hire Show would not be complete without the ‘Passionate Hire Awards’, which take place at a celebration event on the first evening of the show. The winners of this year’s awards were;

Rocket Rentals, based in Gloucestershire, won ‘The Outstanding Single Depot Hirer’, which was sponsored by Mace Industries and presented by Luke Mace.

The ‘Outstanding Multi Depot Hire’ Award, sponsored by Plantworx Construction Exhibition 2019, presented by Plantworx Sales Manager Angela Spink, was awarded to KDM Hire, based in Northern Ireland.

The ‘Outstanding Customer Service’ Award at the Executive Hire Show 2019 was presented to a company that goes that extra mile for their customers – Swansea based, Miles Hire.

The final award of the evening was the ‘John Jennings Crosshire’ Award, which was presented to Gap Group Managing Director, Iain Anderson.

Executive Hire Show Director, Craig Donovan said: “The Executive Hire Show team would like to thank all exhibitors for supporting the 2019 Show and embracing the new layout and design – we are delighted with the feedback we have received.

We are pleased to confirm that the 2019 Show attracted 1872 relevant hire industry visitors. This is marginally up on last year and consistent with other years.”

Craig pointed out that this figure does not include training providers, asset financiers and recruitment companies, who were allowed entry as non-exhibiting suppliers during the afternoon on the final day. Media and Public Relation personnel were also excluded from the visitor numbers.

Craig added, “86% of all relevant hire industry visitors were from independent operations, re-confirming the pivotal role of local and regional hirers in the on-going success of the Show. This also demonstrates the Show’s continued ability to attract relevant, quality hire executives.”

The Executive Hire Show has confirmed that the 14th annual event will take place on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th February 2020 – at the home of hire at the Ricoh Arena Coventry once again. Booking for the 2020 Show will start during March 2019.

Industrial cleaning equipment specialists work to improve efficiency for trades and construction

V-TUF has established itself as a manufacturer of targeted products through its popular range of M and H class rated dust extraction vacuums and trade specific accessories.

The combat campaign

The combat tagline was introduced through the organisation’s print and online promotions last year, and underlined their intentions to target dust, flood and dirt in commercial markets.

All of the ‘Combat Dust’ dust extraction vacuums are industry rated - HEPA H13 for M-class and H14 for H-class vacuums - guaranteeing the machines’ extraction efficiency and ensuring the compliance of onsite workers during extraction efforts.

The 110v/240v MINI is a compact M-class rated extraction vacuum that features a high visibility hose and cable, to assist in minimising trip hazards on site. 18KPA of suction power and washable filters demonstrate the focus on time and cost-saving capabilities which is carried throughout the range.

The soon-to-be-launched M-class MINI PLUS builds on the practicality of the original MINI with an 18-litre-bag capacity, compared with the original M-class MINI’s 8-litre-bag capacity.

For H-class-rated extraction, the 110v/240v MIDI and MIDI SYNCRO models include a 1400W industrial, bypass, twinturbine motor for increased power and faster clean up, and for additional time efficiency the SYNCRO model has an auto filter shaker feature.


Trade-specific time-saving accessories will become an increased part of the V-TUF range, such as the Cobra shave hook accessory launched last year for the painting and decorating market.

The ‘Combat Grime’ category includes both hot and cold water pressure cleaning equipment; built, developed and tested in house to guarantee the longevity of the machine before reaching the customer.

Both electric and fuel-based machines feature thermal protection valves and additional safety features such as oversized pumps or low oil alerts to help the user protect the machine and reduce potential costly repairs or spares requirements.

2019 will see the addition of compact battery-powered pressure cleaning equipment and accessories for industrial cleaning specialists. With each of the new models designed with time e ciency and cleaning freedom in mind.

As part of their 2019 event calendar, V-TUF will be exhibiting at the Executive Hire Show on 6 and 7 February, as well as Toolfair at Event City in Manchester on 14 and 15 March to conclude the company’s first quarter.
