Scruffs Looks Great For UK Masters Tour

Scruffs is hitting the road again this September, with its biggest ever tour of the UK celebrating Britain’s tradespeople as part of the ‘Masters at Work. Masters of Workwear’ campaign.

With 40% longer sawblade life, Dynashape provides real benefits for Metsec

Dynashape, the UK’s most experienced sawblade servicing and manufacturing specialist, has secured a new 12-month contract with Britain’s largest specialist cold roll-forming company, voestalpine Metsec plc.

The contract is for the supply of TIALN-coated SHSS (Super High Speed Steel) and TCT (Tungsten Carbide Tipped) sawblades, as well as for sawblade remanufacturing.

900 more cuts per new blade

“This will be the second year that we have provided sawblade services for Metsec,” comments Dynashape’s Managing Director, Chris Parkes, “and I am absolutely delighted that the team at Metsec has chosen to appoint us again. When we first won the business in 2015, we demonstrated how our sawblades were capable of delivering in the region of 3,000 cuts per blade. That’s around 900 more cuts per blade than Metsec was achieving using a competitor’s products. More importantly, it underlines the true cost effectiveness of the improved sawblade technology that is employed by Dynashape.”


Remanufacturing blades to perform like new

Providing Metsec with sawblades that have a much longer life, however, really is only part of the story. Dynashape’s considerable investment in the latest CNC sawblade manufacturing technologies – the same machinery that is used by leading sawblade producers globally – means it is also able to remanufacture Metsec’s blunt blades to ‘as new’ standards.

“We presently remanufacture some 20 to 30 SHSS sawblades each week for Metsec,” adds Dynashape Sales Engineer, Richard Meacham. “Depending on usage, blades can typically be remanufactured up to twelve times – and all for a fraction of the cost of buying new.”


TCT and SHSS blades for Metsec’s roll-formed solutions

Metsec specialises in providing the highest quality cold roll-formed solutions. These include purlins and side rails, lightweight steel framing, dry lining and cable management solutions, for the construction industry, as well as custom roll forming and profile manipulation for a wide range of market sectors including construction machinery, transport, office furniture and energy.

Dynashape supplies sawblades to both the Custom Roll Forming (CRF) and Profile Manipulation (MPM) areas at Metsec’s Oldbury-based manufacturing site. The CRF division produces bespoke profiles from S460 steel and uses Dynashape’s 600mm diameter coated TCT and SHSS TIALN-coated blades. Metsec’s Profile Manipulation division uses Dynashape’s 300 - 315mm diameter SHSS TIALN-coated blades.

Remanufacturing, never just sharpening

Instead of sharpening blunt sawblades, Dynashape’s approach is to remanufacture them using its advanced CNC machinery. For the majority of Dynashape customers, this means that for around three-quarters of its useable life, a remanufactured blade will perform like new, before there’s any issue of degradation due to reduced base material and tooth facet. “The real point,” stresses Chris Parkes, “is that our remanufactured blades perform just as precisely as they did when new, all for substantially less than the cost of purchasing new blades.”


Creating bespoke cutting solutions

Using its CNC machining technologies and calling on its many years of sawing expertise, Dynashape can also enhance new blades to improve on OEM-supplied products and create bespoke cutting solutions and tooth profiles for superior results when cutting all manner of materials. An example of this is the company’s ability to manufacture ‘special plastics’ blades with a unique tooth design for the creation of an aesthetically pleasing ‘diamond-polished’ finish when cutting acrylics.

ABUS sees success with their Cylinder Systems Roadshow

July 25th saw a selection of locksmiths attend the first ABUS Cylinder Systems Roadshow at the Mariott Hotel in Waltham Abbey.  This event was ABUS’ first in a series of roadshows designed to host a small, individually selected group of locksmiths, allowing them the opportunity to meet and liaise with the ABUS UK Sales Director, Product Manager and Sales Team Manager along with the export product manager from ABUS headquarters in Germany. 

The evening started with a presentation detailing the ABUS company profile, followed by a presentation on the 2030 and 2034 patented ABUS Bravus, Zolit and Vitess cylinder systems and details of the ModularMX system, (with yet to be fully released new starter kits) followed by a brief overview of the ABUS padlock range. 

All attendees were given hands on training with examples of pinning cylinders and padlocks, everyone left with a goody bag to take away with them, plus exclusive access to on the night special offers with huge discounts and incentives for purchases made in follow up meetings along with an opportunity to visit the factory.

Dinner was provided for all guests, and special room rates were secured with the hotel for anyone wishing to take advantage of an overnight stay.  The meeting was a great success with lots of positive feedback from all attending.

e-learning launched by Considerate Constructors Scheme

Over 3600 courses undertaken so far by construction sites, companies and suppliers registered with Considerate Constructors Scheme.

The Best Practice Hub - the construction industry’s online platform for sharing best practice - has launched a series of free e-learning courses designed to help raise standards across the industry.

Considerate Constructors Scheme-registered construction sites, companies and suppliers of all sizes can undertake the e-learning courses, designed to improve their knowledge of the Scheme, in order to meet and exceed the expectations of the Scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice.

The e-learning courses, which are eligible for CPD, were launched to all Best Practice Hub registered users during May, and have since then received a huge response, with over 3600 courses being taken by over 750 individuals across the sector. 

Completing e-learning improves users’ understanding of the Scheme’s Monitors’ Checklist, as well as providing a range of ideas to help fully prepare for Monitors’ visits. There are six courses available, five of which relate directly to the Scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice: Care about Appearance; Respect the Community; Protect the Environment; Secure everyone’s Safety; Value their Workforce, and one which provides an introduction to the Scheme.

Order puts Morris Site Machinery on the up Down Under

Leading Midlands manufacturer, Morris Site Machinery is flying the flag for Britain overseas having secured over £3.5 million worth of international orders in one month as it further strengthens its ambitions and growth into global markets.

After a year’s worth of new product development and strategic planning, these orders will see the company supply Australia’s largest equipment hire company, new customers in Dubai to support projects in the lead up to Expo 2020 along with new orders from Russia.

Working with its partner Allight Sykes, the company will provide 300 SMC TL90 LED ELV lighting towers, throughout 2016 and into 2017 to Coates Hire in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The efficient, extra low voltage equipment was exclusively designed to meet the increasingly stringent health and safety requirements Down Under and suit a range of sectors.

Paul Thompson, CEO of Allight Sykes, said: “This significant contract win is a great result for our partnership with Morris Site Machinery. Our customers expect robust, safe and economical solutions.”

The SMC TL-90 LED ELV is one of the most efficient extra low voltage lighting towers on the market. Compact and easy to transport, it is super silent and offers up to 165 hours of uninterrupted operation.

Its four 300W powerful DC LED lamp heads give directional, clear and crisp light with a spread of up to 100 metres.  It also has advanced safety features including automatic mast descent when the handbrake is released, central lifting eye and accessible lashing down points for ease of loading at ground level.

Over 50 TL90 LED lighting towers will be delivered into Dubai after securing an order from a new customer. The TL90 LED towers have been chosen for use on various construction projects in the lead up to Expo 2020 and the products have been specifically adapted to improve heat reflection and ensure operation in high temperatures.

Isabel Martinson appointed as Executive Chairman of the Considerate Constructors Scheme

Former Trade Association Forum Ltd Chairman and Company Director with a wealth of experience in strategic development and senior management takes-up new role of Executive Chairman

The Considerate Constructors Scheme have announced the appointment of Isabel Martinson as Executive Chairman, with effect from 12 July 2016.

The new role of the Executive Chairman will be to further develop strategies to enhance the Scheme, by taking it ‘to the next level’. The Scheme’s vision is to make registration essential for every construction site, company and supplier, large or small, to ensure continual improvement in performance leading to a step change in the image and attractiveness of construction as a sector. 

Isabel has had a hugely successful career that has included senior positions in the trade association sector and military service. In addition to her role as Chairman and Company Director of Trade Association Forum Ltd, she was also Chief Executive of The Giftware Association until June 2015. Prior to this, Isabel was Head of Marketing, Communications and Export Services at The Sports Industries Federation.

Isabel served in the Royal Navy and was one of the first female Naval Supplier Officers to serve at sea, reaching her final Naval appointment in 1997, in the rank of Lieutenant Commander - a key management post in Europe’s largest Naval Base, leading 177 staff with a budget of £5m per annum.

Isabel is a member of the Chartered Management Institute.

Research project seeks to strengthen CDM weaknesses

Contractors BAM Construction and ISG are among a host of organisations involved in an international research project aimed at reducing occupational injuries and illnesses in the construction industry.

The academia-led project will focus on improving health and safety through design.

The aim is to create a new tool that will enable architectures and engineers to assess and improve their ability to produce designs that are inherently safer for contractors to build and maintain as well as being safer for occupants to use.

The project, funded by the UK Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council, is being undertaken by an international research team of academics and practitioners from the Health & Safety Executive, Heathrow Airport, Mott MacDonald, BAM Construction, ISG, Nick Bell Risk Consultancy, GCP Architects, Safety in Design, the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), Loughborough University and East Carolina University. The project commences in October and will run for two years.

It is estimated that the global construction sector accounts for 100,000 fatalities annually and about 30 to 40 per cent of all fatal occupational injuries. Injuries and new cases of ill health in construction are estimated to cost society more than £1.1bn a year in the UK.

The project's principal investigator Patrick Manu, a senior lecturer in construction project management at UWE Bristol, said: “The construction sector is notorious for the numerous occupational injuries and illnesses it records which also leads to huge social and economic costs for the industry, governments and societies. Studies have established that design is a significant contributor to the occupational injuries and illnesses in construction and as a result 'design for safety', also called 'prevention through design' is increasingly becoming prominent in construction worldwide.”

Design for Safety (DfS) is mandatory under the UK Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 which stipulate that designers, when preparing or modifying designs, should eliminate, reduce or control foreseeable risks that may arise during the construction, maintenance and use of their buildings. The regulations also state that the appointment of organisations with design responsibilities should be based on their capability. However, there is currently no robust systematic approach for establishing the DfS capability level of design firms.

The research will  seek to develop a web-based DfS capability 'maturity indicator' tool which will offer an improved approach for accessing the DfS capability of construction supply chain organisations involved in architectural and engineering design.

Dr Manu said: “In order for firms with design responsibilities to produce inherently safer designs for construction, maintenance and use of built assets, they need to have the appropriate level of capability maturity. The question then is how can this level be reliably assessed when existing schemes do not fully enable that? Furthermore, in line with the popular maxim, 'If you can't measure it you can't improve it', a bigger question is how can firms improve their capability when they are unable to systematically ascertain their current level in the first place?”

Liz Bennett, of Safety in Design, an organisation which supports designers and decision makers in the built environment, said: “The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 require at Regulation 8 the skills, knowledge, and experience (SKE) for individuals and the organisation capability for companies supplying services to construction projects. The construction industry struggles with what is meant by ‘organisational capability’ and how to demonstrate quickly and easily the necessary SKE. The capability maturity indicator tool will provide a much needed flexibility. It will recognise that companies develop and can improve, especially when benchmarking themselves against others in their sector and of their size. It will allow clients to define a level of maturity and to provide the appropriate level of support and fees to allow for effective project delivery. It is naive to suppose that every company has the same approach to health and safety in design and the same ability to engage effectively. The tool will allow for clarity for all stakeholders and the reduction of inappropriate assumptions.”

Professor Mike Behm, of East Carolina University, said: “This research project will enable design organisations to assess and improve their understanding of, and ability to, engage in meaningful safe design. The project is important to the global design and construction sector, which continues to be plagued by a disproportional accident frequency and severity rate compared to other industrial sectors.”

Plantworx and Primary Engineer team up to inspire Engineers of the Future

The CEA (Construction Equipment Association) and Plantworx Construction Equipment Exhibition has teamed up with educational organisation, Primary Engineer, to work with more than 25 primary and secondary schools in the Leicestershire area on an exciting STEM vehicle engineering project. This new initiative by the CEA forms part of the CEA Skills Council programme – inspiring our future engineers today!  The presentation and judging of the school projects will be held at Plantworx on Thursday 8th June 2017 as part of the ‘Student Day’.

Engineering Skills and the Potential Impact on the UK Economy.

There is a well-documented drive to increase the number of young people engaging with STEM as a precursor to careers in the sector. Within this ambition is the awareness that the number of females attracted to engineering and science is not increasing sufficiently to make an impact on the gender balance in the sector which wavers only slightly between 6 and 8.7%.

Primary Engineer will provide teacher training to both local primary and secondary schools – Primary Engineer vehicles projects for key stage1 and key stage 2 and Secondary Engineer Fluid Power Challenge for key stage 3 at secondary schools.

The training comprises two teachers per school and an invited engineer. Teachers make models on the course to use in the classroom. They are given an understanding of the curriculum links and access to the Primary Engineer Virtual Learning Environment where teaching resources can be found.

The demand for engineers’ way surpasses the numbers coming through the current routes to apprenticeships and university programmes. Engineering UK’s Annual Report considers that over the period 2012-22 ‘employers will need to recruit 2.56 million people, 257,000 of whom for new vacancies. Overall 1.82 million of these workers will need engineering skills: pro rata, that is an average of 182,000 people per year - yet current figures show only 26,000 people are entering engineering occupations. The scale of the challenge is clear.

Perceptions of engineering stereotypes are ripe for change and this will initiate in primary school classrooms. The attitude toward engineering as a profession by teachers, both primary and secondary is fundamental to how it is portrayed to young people. The teaching of practical maths and science at an age when curiosity is at its highest, and practical working at its most impactful. This will be reflected in pupil’s broader career horizons and aspirations – there is significant value in exploring careers awareness in primary schools.

Engineering is not often seen as a creative industry or one with a social conscience, yet many engineers provide solutions to humanitarian issues impacting on areas such as health, energy and transport.

It is generally acknowledged that engineers have the most sought after skill set of any profession and as such are highly in demand in all sectors. It is this set of transferable skills which are also invaluable in classroom for both pupils and teachers. To attain these skill sets requires engagement with problem solving, applying maths and science to practical activities. Where these skills meet the wider world of engineering the skills find context and meaning it is this combination the Primary Engineer programme addresses.

Primary Engineer and The Universe of Engineering

Primary Engineer has been working with teachers to address the fundamental issue of a lack of engineers and the wider perception of engineering since 2005. It is a not-for-profit organisation instigated through seed-corn funding from the then Department of Trade and Industry.  It has grown over the last decade to deliver teacher training to over 1000 teachers annually, bringing the programme, in the classroom, to over 33,000 new pupils, establishing itself as part of the curriculum in thousands of schools across the UK.

The research demonstrates that primary teachers find STEM subjects more difficult to teach, this lack of skills increases the disengagement of pupils with these subjects from a very early age.  Primary Engineer has addressed this issue by providing teachers with practical skills and academic knowledge to subtly apply and embed the theoretical into the practical, effectively ‘STEM by Stealth’. The impact on the teaching professionals and their pupils which has been reported anecdotally in numerous schools, Ofsted reports and evaluations from Engineering UK’s Tomorrows’ Engineers programme which funded some of Primary Engineers engagement with schools have also demonstrated significant impact on learning outcomes and experiences.

Over the last decade Primary Engineer has responded to the demand led by teachers and local companies expanding the programme from the first Primary Engineer training days delivered to primary teachers to a comprehensive suite of training and whole class activities.

The primary school pupils will be set an engineering challenge to construct a vehicle whilst the secondary school pupils will design a crane using basic hydraulics.  Working in teams, the students will build their projects, which will form part of the school curriculum. The best teams will then present their designs at Plantworx on Thursday 8th of June as part of the Student Day where they will be judged by a team of engineers.  The winning teams will then go on to compete in the Primary Engineer National Finals.
