If I ever wanted an example of a truly hands-on management style I would point people in the direction of Gordon Evans, Neil Coleclough and Chris Owen, Directors of GE Tools based in Rhyl, North Wales. Their enthusiasm, detailed knowledge and willingness to challenge whatever faces them, including me and themselves, was really refreshing, and I came away feeling that the tool industry, in particular, needs people like them to thoroughly question the “usual ways of doing things” just to see if we really are doing the best we can. Warnhill Tools and Fasteners was established in 2006, the “baby” of Stephen Warner and Robert Hilditch, both of whom had experience of engineering and retailing. They established the company in a premises on Winsford Industrial Estate in Winsford, Cheshire. Although the business address has remained the same, the increasing levels of company growth each year has meant some internal additions to the building, with new mezzanine floors being added to provide space to house the increasing range of stock needed to supply the needs of the customers. Many of these customers need to have immediate demands for common engineering items instantly met, so a good stock of commonly used components is an absolute must. Read the full profile

In the last few years we have all got used to reading about closing factories and poor industrial performance, particularly in Britain. So, it is very refreshing to learn about a success story. I refer of course to the French company GYS, based in Laval in the Pays de Loire region of France. GYS is now a major supplier of welding and related tools to the tool distribution industry both in the UK and in Europe, but is a bit of a well-kept secret.
