Hi Forrest, you are indeed correct. I discovered the three step switch only after I was taking the studio pictures and I dropped the torch on the floor. Then the switch worked correctly. I think there must have been a minor glitch on the internals. I agree also that this little torch is a great piece of kit and I now keep it in my dresser drawer for emergencies. It is far superior, size for size, than anything I have tested before.

I have one of the LED Lenser torches (not the P7) and am very happy with it indeed. It too has a domed on/off button on the rear, which you can press part of the way down for flashing the torch, or the whole way down to turn the torch on permanently (and press it again to switch it off).

The Gadgeteer has a review of the P7 at http://the-gadgeteer.com/2008/06/24/led_lenser_p7_led_flashlight_8407_/ and it says:

"The P7 has a three step Quick-Cycle switch function. Press power without clicking it for maximum light, click it once for low light, click again for high beam and then again to power it off."

Also the manufacturer's website at http://www.zweibrueder.com/ENG/produkte/html_highperformance/html_Pserie/p7.php?id=p7 has a graphic which shows the various modes of the "Dynamic Switch".

Are you sure that the button on your P7 only flashes the torch, or is it a multi-function switch as described above?
